If you are new to yoga or even a seasoned yogi, chances are you have heard your yoga teacher mention the words "the sutra's" or the "eight limbs of yoga" or even mentioned the great yoga teacher, Patanjali. And although there are many types, styles and paths of meditation such as, meditation in the Buddhist tradition, Transcendental Meditation, yogic meditation practices, meditation through religion, etc, there is always only one 'goal'. This text organizes yoga into eight distinct paths, or limbs, for obtaining samadhi (enlightenment, pure awareness, nirvana).

This was an amazing experience of learning not only about yoga but about life. Yoga, Pranayama, Meditation, Samadhi and Samyama are part of the Eight Limbs of Yoga in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and Samyama is talked about from over 5000 years ago in the Third And Fourth Chapter of The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.

In verse 2.1, Patanjali says: "Kriya yoga consists of tapas (austerity, self-discipline), svadhyaya (self-study), and Ishvara pranidhana (devotional surrender to God)." (Note: The words in parentheses are commonly accepted translations of the Sanskrit terms.) In the "eight-limbed" path, the kriya yoga practices of niyama precede asana (meditation posture), pranayama (breath control), pratyahara (withdrawal of the senses from their objects), dharana (concentration), dhyana (uninterrupted, deep concentration), and samadhi (oneness with the object of meditation).

And when the mind becomes tired of Vipassana, we then rest it in Samadhi practice again. On the contrary, Patanjali never called his path that of action (or kriya) yoga; not in verse 2.1 (pada 2.1), nor in any other verse, nor did he say it consisted of anything other than ashtanga yoga.

When a Yogi enters into Samadhi regularly he becomes so much adept in this practice that he no longer thinks about practice, detachment or true self. Meditation is not a part of this Yôga and it should not be included in a practice of Hatha. Where asana works on a physical level, pranayama on an energetic level, and meditation on a mind level, pratyahara works on all three levels and thus is practiced in asana, pranayama, and meditation. To silence one's mind and come together with that of the divine, the Sutra calls for an adherence to the eight limbs of Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, and Samadhi.
