Growing up in small-town Wallis, TX, where the tractors and farmlands blossom play a vital role in everyday life, it seems only right that restoring old tractors could become a passion for regional Future Farmers of America (FFA) teens.

Influenced by that passion, two Wallis kids entered the 2005 Chevron Delo Tractor Restoration Competition, making it completely towards the event's finals at the National FFA Convention in Louisville, Kentucky. The determination is rewarded by the Tractor Restoration Competition, enterprise savvy and physical skill of high school-aged FFA members from across the country. Students are required to submit a book that details the whole restoration process. The skills learned through your competition help develop the players in-to future leaders in the agricultural area. The teenagers, members of the Brazos, TX, FFA, reveal a talent for mechanical repair and an interest in classic vehicles, together with another thing: Tyler and Jordan Raska are brother and sister.

While the situation might have changed into a sibling rivalry, the Raskas rather took an alternate way of their recovery projects. In place of battling to overcome another, Jordan and Tyler done their buses together, offering support and encouragement along the way. In case you desire to be taught further on, we know about many online resources people could investigate. Throughout the long hours spent revamping their vehicles and watchfully taking the complete process, the team bonded amid the grease, paint and rusty tractor parts.

In the end, however, there may only be one winner. Work, determination and technical savvy repaid for 18-year-old Tyler Raska, the person winner of the Chevron Delo Tractor Restoration Competition.

A senior at Brazos High, Tyler is no stranger to tractor competitions. He's been fixing vehicles for four years, and had a particularly productive year in 2005, winning the eight shows he attended along with his Grandpa's 1959 John Deere 630, including a national opposition and three state contests.

Tyler, who has a learning disability, has benefited greatly from participating in the tractor contests. They've helped him build confidence and focus on his strengths, improving his project management and public speaking skills. And each year his knowledge of tractor parts is continuing to grow.

'I prefer to just take a classic tractor and allow it to be as effective as new, or even a lot better than the original,' said Tyler. 'This year was especially satisfying because I worked in the garage with my Grandpa and restored something which was particular to him.'

The knowledge was an exceptionally good one for Jordan, the only girl from the Brazos FFA to enter the competition, while falling a bit short in her quest for the title. Tired of being the 'go-fer girl' for Tyler as h-e worked on his buses, Jordan decided to conquer her own recovery, a John Deere 420.

Jordan, in her first-year showing tractors, originally drew inspiration from an unlikely place-the music video for 'Save your self a Horse, Ride a Cowboy,' by country group Big and Rich. The music-video exhibits Gretchen Wilson operating a 'sweet' tractor and Jordan decided she desired to restore one that way.

Working side by side with her brother and her dad, Jordan's knowledge of tractors increased greatly over the span of the task. She did as much of the job by herself that she could and then consulted the males for explanations and hands-on demonstrations when necessary.

'I suggest the Chevron Delo Tractor Restoration Competition to others,' Jordan said. 'It can be an amazing learning experience that helped me develop skills for life. Plus, I've had the chance to work along-side my brother, meet new people and make great new friends.'

'Chevron creates the Delo Tractor Restoration Competition understanding that the abilities and lessons learned during the repair process gain the kids for life,' mentioned Nicole Fujishige, professional automotive lubricants marketing manager, Chevron Products and services Company. Currently, both Jordan and Tyler are restoring trucks for the 2006 Chevron Delo Tractor Restoration Competition. They each have their own tractor, plus they're focusing on one together. With yet another year of experience under their belts, the teenagers are looking towards next year's event-and why not a different Raska about the winner's podium..
